TAHLEQUAH – When the doors opened on the new Cherokee Casino Tahlequah on April 30, it was the fruition of an idea seeded about 10 years ago. The Cherokee Nation is starting work on a casino expansion project in Oklahoma. The tribe is moving the Cherokee Casino in Tahlequah to the nearby Cherokee Springs Plaza. Plans call for a hotel, convention center and new clubhouse for the adjacent Cherokee Springs Golf Course. Cherokee Springs Plaza is a multi-use retail development in Tahlequah, the tribal capital. Since the first phase opened in 2016, several businesses have opened there, The Cherokee Phoenix reported. Groundbreaking for the casino takes place March 26, the paper reported.
